La juventud retó al peligro cara a cara

Texto de la tarja situada en el frente de la Biblioteca Pública Provincial Rubén Martínez Villena: El 11 de marzo de 1949, un grupo de marines norteamericanos profanó la estatua de José Martí en el Parque Central habanero.  Las reacciones de indignación en la ciudadanía, la prensa y varias instituciones cubanas no se hicieron esperar,  condenando el hecho y la aptitud pasiva de las autoridades republicanas. Al día siguiente la Federación Estudiantil  Universitaria organizó un acto de desagravio al Apóstol  en el sitio de la ofensa.

Desde allí una multitud enardecida se dirigió, por la calle Obispo, hacia la embajada de los Estados Unidos de América, ubicada entonces en este edificio de la Plaza de Armas,  para exigir que los profanadores fueran entregados a la justicia cubana.

Un joven de 22 años estudiante de Derecho de la Universidad de La Habana, se destacó en esta  jornada de repulsa: Fidel Castro Ruz.
